I didn't know who Mikel Jollett was when I started reading Hollywood Park. I was cheering for success in life for him throughout the book and was happy to see he achieved it with a career as a musician and author.
I don't like to give away "spoilers". I will say Mikel's life story made me feel every emotion from heartbreaking to read of his early childhood in a cult to anger at his mother's NPD to fear he would follow a road to addiction to happiness at his success.
At times I had to put the book down and walk away for a bit - just from feeling so sad over what he went through. His story is well written and the book is chronological. I listened to one of his songs afterwards as well. Really powerful book.
