“Hollywood Park” By Mikel Jollett is the autobiography of a man who was born into a cult, then later stolen away by his mother. From there Jollett struggles to navigate the world of abuse, neglect, and a childhood that seems to haunt his future. Amidst all the sadness, there is hope and joy.
The first thing I noticed about this book is Jollett’s rhythm. The unmistakable flow of childhood ramblings fill his thoughts on childhood. I feel like this is how a kid would think. This stream of thought changes as he grows older and I can’t help but love it. The rhythm gives the story a real and raw feeling of being true thoughts.
Jollett also seems to grow throughout the book. Granted this is real life and not everyone grows, Jollett sees the past and his future and he wants things to be better. Different. When you grow up in an unstable environment, your life can go better or it can follow your parents. Jollett chases after the life he wants – not one of addiction, sadness, and pain. He manages to release his emotions and begin to understand himself in order to find love and happiness.
Overall, I gave this book 4 stars. I felt like the rhythm of the book heavily lead readers into stream of conscious thought and that made this autobiography flow extremely well. Jollett’s story is interesting because he is not in the majority. He fights for each moment and loses sometimes. It makes readers want to root for him. This book hits shelves May 5th, be sure to check it out!
