I barley ever read memoirs. I'm not really sure why, they just never jump at my attention. When this one showed up though, I knew I had to give it a chance.

I love to read about cults and counter cultures that turn into them. It's a topic that has fascinated me since childhood. Mikel and his brother were children in the cult, Synanon. This memoir follows Mikel and his struggles with life after his mother escaped with them.

There are struggles of addiction, poverty, family, emotional abuse and recovery, and so so much more. The audiobook is absolutely amazing, Mikel narrates himself and his band also plays a bit. I find it hard to review memoirs, but this one was really really good! Goes to show that you don't need to know the person behind the lifestory to enjoy it!

I love that the music his band creates is incorporated into the audiobook version as well.
