Hollywood Park is a memoir about life after escaping a cult as a child, how to navigate life when you don’t really know your place, and a path to different forms of love and acceptance from others when you have a hard time accepting yourself. I have already talked my mom and sister’s ears off about this book; everyone should read it!!!

I absolutely loved this memoir. The beginning starts with a young child’s escape from the cult with a lady he is supposed to call mom. What does mom even mean though when you were taken from her at 6 months? I love how the writing reflected the age of Mikel at that point in the story. At the beginning, it shows his confusion about what is happening. As he gets older, we read about different internal and external struggles Mikel faces: his drinking before he hits his teens, and his tricky relationship with his mom, his dad, his moms various boyfriends, and his brother. It is beautifully written, held my attention throughout, and left me with some tears shed!

This is definitely one of my favorites this year! Thank you so much celadon books for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review. It comes out May 5. I will be raving about this one for a long time!!
