Since this excerpt occurs 15 chapters into the book, it feels a bit abrupt, leaving you to fill in some of the blanks on relationships that you'd have if you'd started the book from the beginning. Besides that, it is dreary, depressing and disheartening, and if your childhood wasn't like this make you thankful it wasn't.
