We’ve all heard the adage that “truth is stranger than fiction.” To go along with that, some say that if a certain story were written as fiction that it would not sell because people would not believe it. Mikel Jollett’s memoir titled Hollywood Park fits both descriptions. Jolletts’ parents join the Church of Synanon, a violent and dangerous cult. Mikel and his older brother are separated from their parents and put into the cult’s school. After years of abuse, Mikel, his older brother, and his mother escape. The memoir details the trouble within the Church of Synanon as well as the struggles the trio faced when they moved to the outside world.
