An old house, a vanished girl, an uncanny doll and mysterious shadows. It’s the stuff of haunted house stories and this one promises to be deliciously spine tingling.

The story starts off mildly enough. Evelyn Archer has been uprooted from her home in New York but she’s surprisingly sanguine about it. She already misses her friends but she’s not sulking about the loss like her brother is. Then she spots—something in the road. Her mother doesn’t see it but Evelyn could swear she saw something fur-covered walking by, its glistening eyes staring at her.

The author paces the initial chapters carefully, giving us a jump scare here and there but placing the chilling parts in unexpected places. Evie is primed for mysterious events as the small-town people know the house’s reputation and are staring at her, wondering what she’s seen and eager to let her in on Hobbie House’s enigmatic history. The place has been nicknamed Horror House by the local inhabitants so we’re all set for a proper spookfest.

If the rest of the book is as excellent as the opening chapters, I’m going to be in for a creepily grisly time.
