I am not a huge fan of the detective solving a murder series since it locks me into having to read all of the previous books. I do like to mix up my genres every now and again. It also seems like it would be difficult to follow with several time lines in addition to several murders to solve. For me, that seems like too much work to try and focus and keep everything straight. I prefer to read a book and get lost in its story without having to spend effort in keeping track of who is doing what in what timeline.
