Sorry for the late first impression - I am new to Bookish First and I am trying to get caught up on the first looks!

The premise of this story is very inventive - a body horror second-chance romance between a zombie-in-treatment and a human. The first few chapters lean into an interesting dichotomy; while Mara the Tick was a mindless killing machine who doesn't fully remember her kills, she has already regained much of her humanity. On the other hand, Rory is fully human, but the trauma of the apocalypse has hardened her. For a zombie story, it brings up a whole lot about what it means to be human and what it means to find each other.

I like how it didn't shy away from the grisly details, but the plot itself is what drives this story. There's a lot of world to build, and I would have to read more to see how the Ticks actually work, but it is off to a great start.
