I love post-apocalyptic books and I couldn’t believe this one was a debut! Hearts Still Beating was a fun zombie apocalypse novel that I read over the span of two days. The pacing was a little off at times and the “bad guys” were almost like… cartoonishly evil? But there were some unique concepts in here and Mara and Rory were just so cute together! I loved seeing how they interacted throughout the entire book, and how their attitudes towards each other slowly changed.
Something about the disease being called “the Tick” I found cringey but I got past it eventually! This was also more gory than I expected, which was a nice surprise since I feel like most YA books try to avoid that.
