A Timely Book

“Hanger Management” by Susan Albers seems to be a quite timely book. The topic of hunger and how it strongly affects ones emotions is one that isn’t very well addressed in laypeople’s terms. Within animals the idea of food anxiety- the desperate attempt to calm anxiety in the body by locating and consuming food- exists. Within humans this idea didn’t seem to exist in literature though it definitely existed in the real live of people.
While at first the book seemed a little jarring to me I recognize that perhaps that is purposeful. Most books by experts, even ones written to be accessible to every day readers, still has a ring of academia to it. “Hanger Management” does not have that ring. I will have to read further to determine if this is an aid or detriment overall. I do think though that the conversational tone helps make a very important topic palpable and accessible to readers across the spectrum and this, when concerning such a popularly discussed though relatively unknown condition, is helpful in the long wrong. The timing, the topic, and the content of this book couldn’t have come at a better time.
As far as the cover, it’s a mix of comical and eye catching. It definitely draws the reader in.
I’m definitely looking forward to finishing this book and comparing Albers advice to that from others who work around the study of food and body image.
