I love how books have the power to remind us how similar we are as humans, no matter where we come from. Most of us want or are seeking happiness and love, and that was the case here, in this bittersweet, well-written novel.

This book was a bit different than I expected. I expected to see more about the political turmoil and how the regime change affected Amineh, and I didn't expect as much of a romantic element. I would not say the description is misleading, though, just that what stood out the most to me from the blurb wasn't as much of a factor as I'd expected.

Amineh finally experiences a lot of growth. It felt organic as she struggled with grief and guilt for much of her life. Some of the misunderstandings and 'What ifs?' made me sad but were realistic.

There were a number of surprises along the way: a few plot twists and some turns with some of the other characters that I hadn’t expected. I never would have guessed the ending from the beginning, but it felt earned.

Thank you Bookishfirst for the early read.
