Readers may well be entranced by the collage cover of HALF A CUP OF SAND AND SKY and so want to discover the secrets hidden.

Introvert Amineh "...cherished reading more than anything" surprises herself with a growing attachment to international Nuclear Disarmament Activist, Farzad.
As they gravitate together, a close friend, Tahmures, is tortured and murdered by the Iran Secret Police, SAVAK.

Somehow, this does not propel any of them to leave the country, notably after the
Shah Revolution delivers them to another Islamic dictator, Khomeini.
Oddly, there is little description of their lives under his reign.

The moving plot delivers a lot of strong information, from the overthrow of Mosaddegh, a democratically elected leader, by the United States to the horrifying details of the explosion of a Nuclear Bomb, also courtesy of the U.S. and then India and Pakistan.

The ongoing mystery is why Mahiste and Farzad think so much of the main character, Amina, when she, constantly plagued by detrimental second-guessing, lying, insecurity, a bunch of guilts, and the steady unswerving desertion of her book where she fears to be a main character depicting the lives of her parents. This majorly detracts from the plot and development of other characters.

Including the Sufi and other poems mentioned by Jalaod-Din would enrich the plot since the last quarter was otherwise very inspiring, despite cliches of locust revelation and Farzad's journals.
