This is going to be a difficult one to review, and it's even harder to assign a rating because this book inspires a lot of complicated feelings. It's painful, it's horrifying, and it's exceptionally well written. The characters are well described, complex, and fascinating, with the complications of small town connections and long memories. There are some chapters of this book that are legitimately impossible to read and that I definitely skim-read or skipped sections of because they detail abuse and situations that are deeply upsetting and terrifying. I am not usually squeamish, but this book has numerous scenes that challenged me and shocked me. The setting is one of those atmospheric, well described ones that absolutely becomes a part of the story and is as detailed as the rest of the book. It's hard to say that I'd recommend this one because of the content, but readers who feel up to it will find something special here.
