I was super excited for Granite Harbor after reading the preview. A serial killer loose in a small Maine town? The premise sounds right up my alley but the story unfolded a lot differently than what I was expecting. Slight spoilers but after finding a local high school boy murdered the small town is clinched in fear.

The local policeman Alex is assigned the case. He’s an englishman who still feels like a stranger in Maine. He feels uncomfortable he was always meant to be a writer not a cop but after his first book his writing career fizzled out. Along with his marriage now he only has his daughter Sophie but their relationship is strained.

As for the heart of story I was a little disappointed to be honest. The murderer and the murders themselves were grisly and sick. To me almost silence of the lambs level of sickness the toads and secretion… Had the novel gone more into the mind of the killer and what made them tick more than it did very briefly this book would have been fantastic!

The story instead focused more on the secondary and the people affected from the murders that it took away from the plot and gory scenes. Contrary to what others may think I thought several others could have been the murderer. Then who it actually turned out to be. For me unfortunately the murders and solving the crime was an afterthought and not the main focus of the book.
