A gruesome murder shocks the sleepy harbor town of Granite Harbor. A teenage boy is seemingly eviscerated and hung up naked. Inside the body is a toad. This is the first murder case for Detective Alex Brangwen. His daughter Sophie is a friend of the victim which brings an emotional slant to a difficult case. When another boy is murdered Alex realizes the clock is ticking for the other teenagers in the town as he tries not to become sidetracked by evidence pointing in the wrong direction. This is a good mystery with different twists and turns and an ending that had me on the edge of my seat. There are a few triggers in this book that are worth noting. There is some sexual abuse, animal cruelty, forced drug use, and kidnapping. I do hope that this is one in a series of detective stories involving Detective Brangwen, a character worth visiting again!
