Good but something missing

I'm wavering between 3 and 4 stars for this. The book sounded very intriguing based on the blurb, and while it was a good read, there were parts I was missing. I expected the murders to have something to do with the history of the town (and I wished there was more motivation shown for them period.) The gruesomeness I was waiting for didn't happen either. The look into the killer's mind and the mythology driving his actions was very interesting though. Alex going through his first murder case kept me engaged.
There's lots of characters being introduced right away, and it took a bit to figure out which ones were going to actually be important to the story and which were just that quick mention. It did mean there were plenty of possible suspects. We don't get very deeply into the characters, even main character Alex. Mostly basic background information that one would more find in a first-in-series. Wouldn't mind seeing some characters revisited however, see Alex working more cases.
The visions seemed thrown in suddenly and in the end had a rather minimal impact on the final outcome.
A fair book and I'd be open to reading more by the author. There just were aspects that I wished had been more developed.
