Granite Harbor is a small town on Maine’s coast with a minor historical significance. The townspeople have honored this history with the Granite Harbor Living History Settlement, a re-enactment site with locals portraying the early settlers.
Peter Nichols’s story of this small town takes a dark turn when a local teenager is brutally killed. The whole town is rocked by this murder—the parents, the teachers, the other teens, and the members of the Settlement, where his body was displayed. Nichols meticulously introduces the reader to each character, their personalities, their family connections, their interactions with others.
Like all towns, there is a story behind each front door. Nichols details each family’s innermost secrets. He introduces us to the murderer early in the book but keeps his identity from us until near the end. In the meantime, the townspeople are on edge: could this killer be one of them?
This was a compelling read due to the ever-building suspense. I would recommend it to those interested in mystery, police procedurals, and well-written crime novels.
My thanks to Bookish First, Celadon Books and Peter Nichols for an advanced copy of this book. My opinions are my own.
