Thank you Bookishfirst for the advanced copy of Granite Harbor by Peter Nichols in return for my honest review.

Granite Harbor is a book from a genre I typically would not read, mysteries and procedurals yes, but not creepy, twisted, gruesome serial killer stories. Be warned that there is disturbing, horrific animal cruelty depicted in one chapter and graphic child sexual assault in another; both scenes are difficult to forget and are haunting long after the book is finished. That being said, I did find including the perspective and backstory of the killer revealing and a unique approach. This is an investigation by a less than confident local detective of a brutal teenage murder in a small town in Maine. The detective’s daughter was friends with the victim. The investigator is previously from England and the case is the same as another murder from 16 years prior. There are characters to love and despise. There is a supernatural component as well, and while I am not opposed to including supernatural elements in a story, I would have preferred if it wasn’t included in this one. 3.5 stars.
