This is a homerun in the thriller category. That opening chapter is so frightening that some readers may wonder- as I did - if this book is for them. However, this story is also so compelling, whether or not readers think of themselves as fans of thrillers, that you can not help but turn the page. And that's where readers really get hooked. It is because there's also a story of regular people, average adults. Some are frustrated, trying to be patient parents with teenage children that seem increasingly foreign, trying to make ends meet in jobs. Families complicated by every day life. Plus, there's the element of a small town, a place where the lack of privacy can be absolutely suffocating, and of course, the eerie knowledge that evil lurks not far away.
