A Slow Burn

I had extremely high hopes for “Gorgeous Gruesome Faces;” the synopsis and the First Look had me instantly hooked. However, I found the delivery left something to be desired. This book is best described as a slow burn - by the time I was halfway through the book there was still no sign of the sapphic supernatural thriller I had expected to read. The last 1/3 of the book, however, was the exact opposite - I flew through the last 100 pages so quickly!

I enjoyed the supernatural aspect of this story, but wish there would have been more mention of the celestial maiden in the beginning. I also loved the short, easy-to-read chapters and the dual timelines kept things interesting. However, the characters were slightly off-putting, as most of the girls in the competition were rather unlikeable.

While this book wasn’t quite what I expected in the beginning, it redeemed itself in the end and was overall an entertaining read!
