I am a huge dog lover and I loved the format of writing a book based on dog years of a life. I enjoyed her writing and loved the parts about her dogs. I did find the plot very choppy and hard to follow. I had trouble following her life because the plot jumped timeframes so quickly. I enjoyed parts of the book - mostly the story parts about her dogs, her family and her struggle to accept herself. What I didn't enjoy was how the book read as rambling and going off on tangents.
The characters are true to life because they are real people. She writes emotion very well - from confusion to love. Some of the stories I laughed - like the vet not believing the two young boys. Some of the stories I cried - like one of the dog's last days and the dog reminding her she promised she would take care of her when the time comes.
I think I would have enjoyed this book much more if it was better organized.
