‘Everything I know about love I learned from dogs.’ Y’all, that hit me right in the feels. I’m a dog lover, so I connected to every dog the author wrote about. I love the premise of the book, telling your story through the dogs you owned at the time. I also really liked how the author truly made a connection to the dog and told us what she learned from each one. There are so many things that I enjoyed about this story. I loved reading about the author’s human experience and how sometimes you aren’t as progressive and forward-thinking as you thought you were. I enjoyed the stories about her relationships and how she grew up. And of course I loved learning about the dogs that shaped her life. (I will forever have an impression of Matt the Mutt in my mind!)

But there were some things that made reading hard. I felt like the story jumped around too much. I would be reading about one time when the author was a child and then all of a sudden I would be reading about the author being married. It was just a bit jarring and I found that it kinda took me out of the story. Once I had read enough to get a little more background knowledge of the author it wasn’t so bad, but I still found myself wishing I could stay in one time period versus jumping from here to there.

Overall, I enjoyed the story and would recommend it. It’s a great book about love, dogs, and being human.
