I can always remember pets in the parts of my life when they existed, but I can't say that I define the different parts of my life by the animals that accompanied it. That being said, I can certainly understand the sentiment that it isn't about the love our pets have for us, but the love we have for them. I don't think that's enough for me to pull me back into the book in this first look.
