Jennifer was kind to me at a time when it felt that no one in this world would miss me. Long story, but she, at the time, worked with some other LGBTQ celebrities and allies to folks in the community suffering at the holidays. So, some humans can be especially kind even when their own life is full and busy. Having spent much of my life alone or wishing to be left alone, my world has revolved around the gentle spirit of dogs. For me, I have found the strength to go on in the warm, brown eyes of many Golden Retrievers. As Jennifer points out, we could choose to measure our lives in the dogs we’ve shared our lives with. The humorous moments are often when we see the depth of depravity our dogs can go to. Reading Boylan’s introduction of course, in her usual way, brought to mind the time a Golden who was very high strung quite literally destroyed the interior of an RV because a smoke alarm had chirped. The damage included turning on a faucet, batting it over the counter, and flooding the RV, water running out as I returned home. Oddly, my reaction in the face of the aftermath was first to laugh, and then to comfort my dog, after turning the faucet off. Boylan’s recounting the loss of Indigo is of course, the fate we suffer for love of these wonderful creatures with such short lives. I fear the next one every day when I see my beautiful, flawed and lovable dog.
