I'll be honest, I actually had little idea what this book was about before I started it. All I knew was that Marissa Meyer wrote it, and it was a retelling of some kind. I didn't even know which fairytale it was based on, only carrying a slight suspicion it would be either Rumpelstiltskin or King Midas based on the title.

Here's the thing though, I think knowing so little about the plot is what made me absolutely DEVOUR this book because even though this is a retelling of Rumpelstiltskin, its a very loose retelling. Don't get me wrong, all the elements of the original fairytale do make an appearance, but in such a subtle manner that readers who are specifically eager for a Rumpelstiltskin retelling may be disappointed. What this book truly focuses on, and masterfully so in my opinion, is the legend of the Wild Hunt. Meyer takes all the best aspects of gothic tropes and grim horror to create the intriguing tale of a girl who is called before the King of the Hunt on each full moon and ordered to spin gold. This is of course where the lore of Rumplestiltskin comes in, but as I said before, its in a subtle enough manner that it doesn't lead the show. Rather, the two legends are cleverly intertwined into an exciting, ghoul-filled adventure that is sure to capture the attention of any who give a chance.

I'm ecstatic I picked this up when I did and already cannot wait for the sequel. Until then, I'll be daydreaming about what happens next!
