A darkly enchanted, haunting novel, showing us once again that Marissa Meyer is the queen when it comes to fairytale retellings.

This isn't a novel that will blow your mind, but it accomplishes everything it set out to do perfectly and satisfyingly.

Serilda, our mc is tows the line between unwaveringly stubborn and "oh shit, this is scary", making her human and realistic, while not being weak or a 'damsel in distress'.

Gild was amazing, and every page that included him was a little bit more golden. His banter with Serilda was the best thing ever.

I also want to take a moment to appreciate the fact that the children in this book (and there were a decent amount of young children) were all written realistically. No kids acting to old or too young for their age, which I see a lot in books, even by author's who have kids.

There was not a boring moment in this book. Most books take me a while to get into, until I'm fully committed and don't want to put it down, but not this book. I was hooked from the beginning. And that cliffhanger! While it wasn't the worst one I've seen, I still very much want the next book now, please and thank you.
