I am a huge fan of The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer. She is talented at writing fairy tale retelling with twists. I enjoyed this as much as her other standalone retelling, Heartless. They are fun, magical reads. However, as a standalone, both books leave you wanting more. I wish there had been a bit more character development and exploration of the world. However, this is probably more of a problem for me as an avid fantasy reader who reads larger fantasy novels and series. For the lover of YA fantasy, looking for a whimsical read, this is their ideal book. Gilded is a retelling of the tale of Rumpelstiltskin. The protagonist Serilda is ordered by the king to spin straw into gold or be killed for lying. To accomplish this, she makes a deal with a mysterious boy in exchange for a heavy price. The story had such entertaining twists, definitely a fun spin on a classic tale!
