Gilded is an inspired re-telling of the story of Rumpelstiltskin, in which Serilda, our heroin, a miller's daughter from a poor town, is caught one night by the undead hunters and the Erlking, out on the hunt, she tells a tale of being able to spin straw into gold. She believes she has gotten away with her lie, until the next full moon when the hunting party is out again and the king comes for her to use her special talents for him in his castle and if she cannot, he will kill her. Unintentionally, she summons a boy who can indeed help her, for a price. This night and many others to come turn her world upside down and lead her to attempt to uncover a number of mysteries surrounding the castle, her history and that of the mysterious boy.
Marissa Meyer has a true gift of storytelling, one her heroine also shares. While this is a story written for a teenage audience, this is a book that adults will love, as well. The characters, even the dead ones, come to life under her pen, and the reader is pulled in by the plot and the many stories within the story. Despite knowing the original fairytale, it is impossible to know the direction the book will take, so you are left guessing even beyond the end of the story, given the ending. (No spoilers!)
