Gilded is an atmospheric reimagining of Rumpelstiltskin set in Germany and I am here for the creepy undertones and sardonic humor.
To recap what seamlessly pulled me into the story: There is an evil King; the Erlking. He hosts wild Hunts on the Full Moon, craving trophies of mystical and magical beings to bring home to display. The hunt is also notorious for taking children and bewitching others to join, none of whom are ever seen alive again. One night, with his entourage of the undead and hellhounds, the Erlking is seeking 2 moss maidens whom our protagonist, Serilda, hides - thus deceiving him of both the maidens and that she can spin gold from straw.
The following full moon she is taken to the Erlking's home, put into a dungeon full of straw that she is expected to spin into gold by the morning, and told if she fails she and her father will die.
Oh! And then a poltergeist shows up unexpectedly.
