The premise of this book got my attention, so I was excited to read this excerpt--and the short nine pages didn't fail! The author's style of writing is rather staccato, with short, sharp sentences that seem to tell, "just the facts."

At first, I found it a bit jarring, then it clicked. This opening is reminiscent of an old-fashioned private-eye screenplay. Once I got into the rhythm, I found the writing-style added a dramatic sense of mystery, with ominous portents swirling about like melting ice cubes in bourbon.

Then just when I am settling into my leather recliner, ready to sip and read, the First Impression ends with the mother of all cliffhangers.

Wow--what a way to introduce characters and lay the foundations for a great suspense story.

I highly recommend Gate 76. It has all the hallmarks of a thrilling read.
