From beginning to end, I was absolutely absorbed in this book. I pretty much only put it down to go to work and to sleep — otherwise I read it back to back over the course of a few days. I found Marlow to be a really interesting and compelling main character. I enjoyed the way curses and curse breaking propelled the story forward and raised the stakes. While the plot’s pacing at times echoed the familiar beats of the YA fantasy genre, I overall didn’t mind because the story was well-balanced and well-written.

I found this book to be an absolute page-turner and the only reason I regret that I flew through the book so quickly is that it ends on a cliffhanger and now I need to wait for the sequel to find out what happens! I admittedly thought this was a standalone when I picked it up. I normally wait to read fantasy trilogies until the whole series is out, but I’m glad I read this and can eagerly await the sequel.
