These opening passages present the reader with the notion of cursebreaking, an inevitable part of a world in which magic is present, and Marlow Briggs is one of the best in the business. Marlowe’s name is perhaps a nod to Philip Marlowe, one of the most famous names in fictional detective novels. So she brings induction as well as toughness to her job. She doesn’t like unanswered questions and won’t rest until she gets all the answers, even when a job seems to be done.

In these chapters, she must deal with rough customers, mysterious dames, old acquaintances and a possible ex-flame. The author immerses us in different worlds, bringing us the familiar dichotomy of squalid poverty alongside dazzling wealth. We learn a lot in a few short pages, inviting even more drama in the rest of the novel. For those who like magic mixed up with gumshoe noir, these chapters promise something quite novel.
