I found this first-look intriguing enough! I like the use of cards for curses and hexes, I think that's a very interesting world-building element. I also enjoyed Marlow as a character, I find her interesting and am curious about her past. There's some good mysteries set up in this portion for the rest of the book.
Still, while I feel like it was pretty solid and I was certainly rooting for Marlow, this excerpt didn't really grab me very strongly with its writing style of even its setting--I just didn't get into it very much. That's probably just my own personal tastes though--I can see other people really enjoying this one!
