Frizzy is a wonderful new addition to the growing collection of middle grade graphic novels. An empowering, entertaining story that examines the idea of good hair, Claribel A Ortega and Rose Bousamra have created a story that will certainly help curly haired readers feel seen and affirmed. Marlene hates the weekly ritual of going to the salon to have her hair straightened and questions the contradiction of adults saying it’s what’s inside that matters while stressing the importance of appearance. This book does a wonderful job of exploring hair politics, families, and embracing your own beauty. I loved Tia Ruby’s confidence and mentorship in self love and appreciated that Marlene’s mom’s relationship to her curls was explored. While specific to hair, I could see any kid who has felt they needed their appearance to fit a certain expectation to be uplifted by the story. Marlene and her best friend are a fabulous example of friendship at its finest. A must buy addition to any young reader’s library.
