This is a lovely graphic novel about a young Latina girl who is criticized for her hair by the entirety of her family. We watch as this young girl is constantly forced to go through unwanted and torturous hair routines to please her mother and family members. She is conditioned to only believe having straight hair is beautiful and correct etiquette. We watch her struggle with her self image as her family continues to judge and critique her appearance and behavior. We watch this young girl grow into her own confidence and truly understand that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. We watch as she uncovers the strength of her natural beauty and how she shouldn’t have to change anything about herself in order to make others like her.
