5 stars all around. I definitely resonate with this book, especially being a curly girl. The feeling of my hair being too much or “inappropriate” or “not good hair.” I never grew up constantly at the salon getting my hair straightened out, but I know the feeling of being annoyed and pissed off at my hair for not knowing what to do with it. And without close contact to the Black women in my family, I just ended up keeping it in braids, especially with the other kids trying to touch my hair. I got older and, like how Marlene’s Tia Ruby, I taught myself how to get better at conditioning and styling and embracing my hair. It’s my roots and family history after all. Along with the beautiful messing this book gives, the art and colour palette is beautiful to me as well, especially as an artist thinking about getting into the comic art industry. It’s a great book to read when I’m down and will keep reading it forever.
