My daughter has a hard time reading books, well she has a hard time finding books she likes. This is one that we loved. My daughter is able to relate to the little girl in the story because she also has a hard time accepting her banana curls. She has also called her hair frizzy too. The girls mother and aunt supporting her and being there for her is a beautiful part of the story. Finding the strength to finally tell her mother how she feels when they go to the salon, and that she wants to love her hair. The aunt supporting her from the beginning, I had someone like that in my childhood and my only wish is that my daughter realizes is beautiful even if, like the character she gets made fun of and doesn't believe it.
The mistakes the mom made were relatable, but at the end she realizes she has to help her daughter love her curls and take care of them.
