Frizzly is a story about a young dominican girl named Marlene, who is struggling with her self-image. Her mother is also at fault because she is the one who makes her get her hair straightened every week, while all our protagonist wants is to set herself be free. Her main focus is her want to style her hair differently than being told what was appropriate.
The book itself is a graphic novel for young middle grade readers as target demographic, but it can be read just as easily by older generations. Its message is sweet and thoughtful and compelling. The main theme is being true to who you are, even when people pressure you not to. Despite that, the story is light-hearted and beautiful.
