Frizzy is a really lovely story, with charming characters and equally charming illustrations. I don’t often read graphic novels, but I found the art here really complimented the story and enriched my reading experience. In particular, I love the way hair and our relationship with hair was captured in the art. This is a lovely story of self acceptance, family, social pressures and norms to conform, and identity. It thoughtfully challenges prevailing ideas about beauty and identity. This story would be a great holiday gift for any young reader, but particularly those who are struggling to fit in or feeling different from everyone else. I also feel that stories like this are becoming more important to introduce to adolescents and tweens — as kids are on social media at younger ages, stories about embracing your own beauty, identity, and differences are increasingly vital. Charming!
