Frizzy is a middle grade graphic novel about identity and loving yourself for who you are. But it goes much deeper than that and delves into racism and anti-blackness. There is a discussion on how these prejudices are deeply rooted and are passed down from generation to generation in a way that is easy to understand and gives hope for change. All of these important topics are packaged into a graphic novel with a humorous and heartfelt story centered on hair with gorgeous illustrations. I highly recommend this book to kids with all kinds of hair—whether they believe they have “good hair” or not—because the theme can be applied to all readers. For anyone who struggles with or has struggled with feeling not good enough, feeling less than others, or feeling like the “other” in any sense of the word, this is a story that makes you feel seen and worthy of being seen.
