This middle-grade graphic novel is about Marlene, a young Dominican girl who is tired of going to the salon every week to get her hair straightened. Her family often tells her she needs to be more ladylike and compares her to her cousin who has “good hair.” With the help of her best friend and her Tía Ruby, she decides to let her natural hair shine.

This was a wholesome but important story about learning to love yourself despite what those around you say about the way you look or act. This will be an impactful story for many young girls struggling with their family’s or society’s beauty standards of how they are supposed to look. The art in this graphic novel was stunning and I loved the purple/pink color scheme. The occasional addition of traditional comic book elements added to the story and Marlene’s character. I loved Marlene and am glad she was able to feel confident in herself and learn to love her curls despite the awful things her family and schoolmates said about her.
