Powerful words, great art
The opening chapters of this graphic novel were incredibly impactful. The author and artist really conveyed the deep-set, painful standards of beauty and behavior that Marlene is held to, and the way that comparison by family members can be extremely hurtful. I love the hint of future hope at our first meeting with her aunt Ruby, who embraces her own natural curls in a way Marlene has never been given the chance to.
