This first impression seems like a nice set up for a story of self-acceptance. A young girl who does not enjoy all the prodding that goes into her mother's idea of beauty and the commentary that others feel they are allowed to make about her appearance. This is unfortunately too true in many families. I look forward to seeing how Marlene grows and accepts herself later in the story.
