Frizzy uses the graphic novel form to its greatest potential in telling the story of a girl who is working through the pressures of others to have “good hair.” I loved the glimpses into Marlene’s imagination of who she could be if allowed to let her natural hair free. The art adds to the reading experience in seeing her reactions and the behaviors of those around Marlene. The introduction of a family member who has embraced her natural hair suggests this story will show Marlene’s (and hopefully her family’s) similar journey. This book would speak to any kids who have felt any part of them doesn’t fit into society’s expectations and will be especially wonderful for any kids whose natural hair has made them feel they need to change it to be beautiful.
