What a great start to a very promising graphic novel! Marlene is dealing with certain beauty standards within her family and culture that are hurting her self-esteem and forcing her to hide or question her authentic self. I think many tweens and young people (and adults) will relate to this story and I can't wait to see her come into her own. The illustrations and colors are beautiful and vivid and add a lot of style and personality into the story. It's great to see so many new books aimed at youth with diverse characters highlighting cultures and groups that haven't been so visible in mainstream media.
