Frankly in Love is the fictional dating story I've always wanted to read. Frank-Li, a high school Korean American student, is dating a white girl whom he believes his parents would disapprove of. He and his Korean American family friend Joy concoct a scheme to pretend to date each other so he can keep seeing his girlfriend and she can keep seeing her Chinese boyfriend. Naturally, they begin to develop feelings for one another. Frank's cultural identity, poetry, relationship with his parents, and going away to college are all discussed in this novel.
This book is beautifully written, the romance is good, and all of the characters are well-developed and well-written. I enjoyed both of Nicola Yoon's novels, so when I learned that her husband was working on one, I knew I had to get it, and I'm glad I did. I'm excited to read his latest novel, Super Fake Love Song, when it comes out in November.
