Frank Li, a senior in high school, is the son of Korean immigrants in Southern California. ‘I say Okay, Dad a lot to Dad. It doesn’t get much deeper than that for the most part. For the most part, it can’t. Dad’s English isn’t great, and my Korean is almost nonexistent. I grew up on video games and indie films, and Dad grew up on I-don’t-know-what.’

Frank’s parents have expectations for him when it comes to a girlfriend: Date Korean. This obviously limits the dating pool and leads to Frank ‘fake-dating’ Joy Song in order to get out of the house to date the girl he’s really interested in, but his parents won’t approve of.

I loved this book! It addresses race and class and love and loss. And it’s beautifully done.
