I absolutely enjoyed this book! It reminded me a lot of what my dad went through growing up. Frank Li is a first generation Korean-American who has a crush on a white girl. This is not something his parents are okay with which leads Frank to hiding his relationship by pretending to date Joy, a Korean friend who is dating a white boy at their high school.

While perfectly representing the struggles of immigrating families, it has an upbeat feel in the novel. I found myself laughing out loud at times, and tearing up at other moments. It helped me to better understand what my father went through growing up as a first generation Mexican American. Even today my grandparents don’t agree with my fathers decision to marry a white girl, much like Frank's parents.
