This book was so wonderful in so many unexpected ways. I loved how it subverted typical Rom-Com tropes and didn't put culture and love at odds, as we see in a lot of media these days. The intergenerational issues between immigrant parents and first generation children was well-explored. Every character felt fully fleshed out and far from cliche, and I found myself rooting for everyone, even though sometimes characters had competing wants. This book was punny, heartwarming, and tear-jerking all in one. It took on issues of racism, sexism, homophobia, toxic masculinity, and adolescence/coming of age without seeming preachy. In fact, it came across as extremely relatable, like the author, despite not being a teenager anymore, really got what teens are going through and empathized with his readers without condescending to them, which, in my opinion, is the most important part of writing good YA. I'm recommending this book to everyone I know because there's something in it for everyone and I came away feeling satisfied with the narrative and appreciating all the new knowledge I came away with from the experience.
